Vacuum Thermoforming Plastic Sheets: What You Need to Know

As explained in the article “Vacuum Thermoforming For Plastic Sheets | Advantages and Disadvantages” on LearnMech.com, thermoforming is a plastic manufacturing process that involves heating thermoplastic sheets and forming them over a mold using heat and pressure. The process allows manufacturers to create parts of various shapes and thicknesses using relatively simple tooling.

Thermoforming begins by clamping a plastic sheet horizontally over a mold. The sheet is then heated using an electric heater until it softens. Temperature control is critical — thermostats manage heater output while cooling air ensures optimal mold temperatures. Once the material is soft, it’s either pressed or stretched over the mold by applying pressure — most effectively, vacuum pressure.
