Borke Mold Specialists: Understanding Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and its Benefits

As explained in the article “What is a Sheet Molding Compound” by About Mechanics, Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) is a glass reinforced thermoset polymer resin available in sheet form, commonly utilized in compression molding processes. The SMC production involves extruding a layer of resin compound onto a plastic sheet and applying chopped glass fiber rovings to its surface. Once matured, the resin sheet is cut to size and placed in a mold where heat and pressure complete the curing process. SMC is favored for molding complex shapes with minimal waste, low labor requirements, and high production volumes.
